Summary:

• Passing tones are notes that aren't part of the chord.
• Passing tones add flavor to the harmony
• Notes of a chord = chord tones
• Notes not of a chord = non-chord tones

• Accented passing tones occur on strong beats and have a leaning or sighing quality to them
• Non-accented passing tones occur on weak beats and have a light and fleeting quality to them
